Cathedral square, 16000 Angoulême

A rare building that has preserved its Romanesque architecture over time, Saint Pierre Cathedral offers us an exceptional testimony to the art of building in the 12th century.

This masterpiece of Romanesque art, built near the city wall, is a real gem. Built in the 12th century on the initiative of Girard II, bishop of Angoulême, Saint-Pierre Cathedral was restored in the 19th century by the famous Paul Abadie, architect of the Sacred Heart. Classified as a Historic Monument, Saint-Pierre Cathedral is worth the detour for its many points of interest. Unlike many cathedrals in France which are Gothic, that of Angoulême is Romanesque. A true school site, architecture and sculpture have largely inspired small parish churches in Angoumois. Its almost entirely sculpted facade is the true centerpiece of the building. Several themes are present: The Ascension of Christ, the last judgment and the famous sculpted frieze representing a combat of horsemen inspired by the Song of Roland.
The visit is limited to 25 people. Departure 5 people minimum. Reservation required at the Tourist Office.
